Grok This! was the first Medicine Park CD project compiled and released in 1998. After dealing with several independent artists through the Silver Moon web site I had become interested in releasing a CD with original music on my own label. The "deface" idea had two strong appealing points to me. One, it allowed us to pay tribute to the artist without actually covering his songs (and thus avoid any legal snafus), and two, I actually find tributes based on muscial themes already mined by an artist to be more interesting than outright covers. So after vollying the idea back and forth for some time on the old A Wizard internet discussion group I requested submissions in March of 1998. The CD was mastered the first week of August and by September the CDs were distributed to contributors. This was created as a not-for-profit venture with any profits going to the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial. At some point in early 1999 I decided to go ahead and make a nominal donation to the charity and then calculate how many units needed to be retained by me in order for the project to break even. The remaining units were then divided evenly and distributed to the contributors. I did hold back one box of 25 units for posterity. At present a few copies are still available at CD Baby and used copies are always available at Amazon.
